Songs of the Civil War: this is not forgotten …

Many people know the expression: “When the guns say, the muses are silent.” His rightness is relative. So, in the Leningrad blockade, the muses were not silent. On the contrary, the verses of Olga Berggolz and Nikolai Tikhonov helped people survive, and gave faith in victory. Nevertheless, quite often those verses and songs that are born directly in the thick of events are doomed to failure – there are too much hasty and emotional in them. And, on the contrary, when an event becomes history, it gradually recedes into the past, there is a probability of the birth of genuine poetic and musical masterpieces. This happened with songs about the civil war – some of them were born later than the events described. In 1924, the Estonian poet Nikolai Kool published in one of the newspapers the poem Death of the Komsomolets – a plain story about the death of a young Red Army soldier during reconnaissance and his farewell to a faithful horse.
